Day 139 - Cowboy Camp

We left camp early and made our way along today’s 130 mile route that would firstly take us to stop one of the day. This stop provided us with a 25 minute walk to Horseshoe Bend which is located near the town of Page, Arizona. This is where we could see the huge meander in the Colorado River from about 1000ft above and, as ever, this provided a great photo opportunity.

We then (we think, this day is very muddled up in our heads as we’re writing it a few days after it happened!) passed through the town of Page where we drove along a mile of road where we counted 9 churches on this road alone (most churches on a 1 mile stretch of road in the USA.)

Eventually we made it to the Glen Canyon Dam (2nd largest in the US – 1st being the Hoover Dam) where we were given time to look in the visitors centre and go onto the bridge and take photos before getting back to the journey. This dam was a pretty impressive sight, if a little controversial due to its potentially limited lifespan due to the build-up of river sediment that, if not removed somehow, will render the dam useless in about 50 years!

Then we went for lunch and this was to be at Lake Powell (2nd largest man-made reservoir in the US) where a few of the group decided to have a dip in the rather murky looking waters of the lake.

We then moved on to our camp for the night – Paria Guest Ranch which was a kind-of cowboy ranch where we all set up the tents etc and them had time to relax a little before tea.

We had steaks for tea which were very nice and followed this with a game of croquet out on the volleyball court – Danny won!
