Day 127 - Fisherman’s Wharf

For our first full day in the windy city (which is a very apt name by the way, as is fog city) we first had to start by doing the thing Danny had been dreading for the past 2 weeks… we had to return the Dodge L

From the rental place we walked a fairly long way up Polk Street until we reached the famous Fisherman’s Wharf of SF. One of the reasons we decided to walk to here first was really to see where we’d have to get the ferry across to Alcatraz. This was because we’d booked onto a ferry that would depart at 12:00 midday tomorrow for Alcatraz and we had to see if we could walk there or if we’d have to commit a budget sin and taxi it there – we could walk it!

Our first impressions of SF were not that good really as we had walk along some rather dirty areas in the city and had seen a lot of homeless people along the way. We hoped that the whole of the city was not like this.

We then walked along the bay at Fisherman’s Wharf until we reached the famous Pier 39 where we opted to go and do a bit of window shopping. This was a nice place and we pottered around for some time; we did spend a bit of time watching all of the sea lions slobbing out in the harbour which they’ve made their home. We ended up buying a bag of mini doughnuts to share as we continued our walk of the Wharf.

We located the Alcatraz landing pier 33 and made a mental note of it for tomorrow before continuing further down the road to the Ferry Building. This building is quite nice and we spent a bit of time wandering through it; though it would be much more impressive when the market is in full swing here.

After the Ferry Building we completed our 5 mile walk of the day by making our way back to the hostel.

We found a good Moroccan food place for tea and due to the waitress’s lack of hearing we ended up with an extra main course of lamb tagine free of charge – not bad ey!
