We allowed ourselves a small stay in bed today, firstly due
to all the hectic-ness of yesterday… yep… but really because we had a lot of
walking ahead of us for yet another day of sightseeing in the Empire State.
We walked all the way down to TriBeCa before cutting east
across the city until we saw the signs for Brooklyn Bridge. We then followed
these signs which lead us onto the famous landmark. The heat was intense once
more but we had brought plenty of water and so set out across the bridge using
its central walk/ cycle path. We’re glad we packed our own supplies as some of
the guys who’d set up shop selling drinks on the bridge must be turning over a
small fortune; charging $4 per bottle of Vitamin Water (opposed to $1.79 normal
price!) The views were pretty good from the far side and the middle but we didn’t
linger long as the heat wasn’t showing signs of relenting.
Back in Manhattan we continued down the east side eventually
reaching the South Ferry port where we waited to board the free Staten Island
Ferry. By now the time was about 18:15 and so we had a good few hours left until
we’d be able to achieve our next goal – Viewing the Manhattan skyline at night.
After the ferry ride we walk half a mile or so along the
waterfront until we found a nice place with a decent view where we could set up
shop. Danny passed some of the time reading while Corrie messed around with her
cameras; tweaking bits and bats, then cleaning lenses, then trying to get the
best positioning for a steady shot. This was one of those occasions on our
travels where we wish we’d got a high specs camera with a big telephoto lens
and a tripod so we could get a really awesome shot of the skyline. We didn’t
though and so we made the most of what we’d got. By about 21:30 we had got the pictures and we thought we’d
best be heading back. We grabbed a Subway for tea and then boarded the next
ferry.
Back on land we gave our legs a rest by catching the tube
straight back to Times Square where we only had a short walk back to the
apartment. This is where we then had a little time to pack before bed.
