Day 182 - A Day in Philly

We awoke to another day of extreme heat and clear skies and slapped on the sun-cream in preparation for the day out in Philly.

To keep costs down we decided to make use of our feet today and so plodded off into the historic district of town. It wasn’t long before we stumbled across the final resting place of Mr Benjamin Franklin and so took a minute to look at his grave from outside of the rails of the cemetery – due to a $2 admission fee!

Further up the road we came to the visitor centre and so popped in to get our hands on a map to aid with our cultural learning. Just next to the centre is the place where the Liberty Bell is displayed. Irritatingly we were beaten to the cue by a few coach-loads of school kids and so passed on this for now. You can actually see the bell without queuing and going into the building due to the huge glass windows here so we didn’t feel that bad.

Next we saw Independence Hall which was close by and after a quick look here we began a free-roaming walk of the town with no particular destinations or sights in mind. We saw lots of nice old buildings; some were probably of note but we didn’t know which were or weren’t – they just looked nice.

We soon found City Hall after passing too many mouth-wateringly scented food places along the route. Across the road were lots of sculptures relating to games such as: dominoes, monopoly and drafts etc. Here is where we also found the Love statue thing and across the road from this we found the large clothes peg!

With the heat taking its toll we slowly ambled our way back to the hotel but going via the tiniest of detours down Elfreth’s Alley which is a lovely little row of cottages. A lot of them did seem to be for sale though.

We spent a bit of time cooling down at the hotel before heading back out and making our way to the end of the pier just over the road from us. From here we stood for a while; taking pictures of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and people watching (lots of couples having picnics and dates at the end of the pier.)

Next was the hunt for cheap food and we decided to scrap our healthy tendencies for the night and get that food that Philly is famous for – The Philadelphia Cheese Steak. These sarnis were good but entirely unhealthy.

Back at the hotel we had chance to pack a little before bed.
