An interesting first experience for both of us last night as
we attempted to sleep on the train. The beds are comfortable enough but neither
of us could seem to get a good night’s sleep; but whether it was from all the
movement and noises or just the excitement of being in a bed on a train we
can’t fathom.
We’ll just explain the sleeper section we’re in a little
more so you have a better idea of that. There are basically 2 beds; one above
the other and these can be closed off from the walkway of the train by way of
thick, sturdy curtains that fasten in the middle. The bottom berth and the top
berth have independent curtains so one doesn’t disturb the other. The top berth
is a simple fold away thing and has a ladder for access to it. The only
drawback for the top bunk is that it doesn’t have a window but it does have
mirrors and lights like the lower berth. Both have comfy bedding and a couple
of pillows with a little bit of storage (we’re glad we checked our big bags
into the baggage carriage.) We are opposite the shower room and so, unlike the
other beds, are not facing a matching pair of beds across the 15 inch wide
walkway. The upper bed can easily fold away during the day and the lower one
disappears to leave you with two comfy chairs… Neither of us opted for this
today though as we were shattered and it was just as nice for us both to sit on
the lower berth bed and relax than the chairs. The only major drawback is the
lack of power sockets; there are some elsewhere on the train but they are few
and far between and there are none in the upper or lower berths. Also, we were
shocked to discover that, even though this is the most luxurious train we’ve
been on, there is no free wi-fi.
The day was interspersed with sleeping, reading and taking
in the views – both from the comfort of the lower bed and the dome car with its
glass roof (though we were hoping they’d clean the windows of bugs etc before
each journey begins!)
Breakfast is a first come first served ordeal but we slept
through that today. We did make the lunch and tea sittings though which was
good because the food was rather tasty!
