We had a bit of driving to do today and decided to leave
fairly early on in the morning, well about 10:00 or so. The drive was, as usual
in New Zealand, a very scenic one with lots of lookouts and viewpoints along
the route. We did our best to stop at a few of these including: Wanaka Lake,
Lake Hawea, Blue Pools, Fantail Creek Falls, Thunder Creek Falls, Haast, Bruce
Bay and the Fox Glacier Lookout. It was a really nice drive and we arrived in
Fox Glacier slightly earlier than we’d planned and so went to book ourselves on
the Heli-Hike tour for tomorrow. We decided upon Fox Glacier as opposed to
Franz Josef after lengthy discussions.
We figured that either one would be
great and they’re both the same price so opted for the longer and larger of the
two instead of the steeper and, we think, slightly faster moving.
After booking onto the 11:50 tour we went back and prepared
some grub, of which we managed to make enough for about ten people again so
saved the leftovers for tomorrow’s tea!
We spent the rest of the night relaxing in the van, mainly
to keep away from the tiny sand-flies that seem to dwell in these parts of the
south island.
